Layla Önlen: Bismillah

A box. One hundred metres of ribbon. A story that slowly comes to life.

In Bismillah, Layla Önlen shares her personal story in a unique way. Together with other women, she embroidered words onto a ribbon one hundred metres long. This ribbon tells the story of her life and makes memories tangible and visible.

During this interactive performance, Layla invites the audience to help unroll the ribbon. This creates a shared experience of text, movement and sound; a performance that brings people together.

About Layla Önlen

Layla Önlen (1978) is an interdisciplinary theatre maker and performer. She graduated from the Maastricht Theatre Academy in 2023 and is currently affiliated with the talent development platform Via Zuid and Platform 0090. In her work, she translates personal history into universal experiences, exploring how memory, the body and community mutually influence one another. Her fascination with textiles and rituals is reflected in the red ribbon: a recurring element in her artistic practice.

Bismillah’ta Layla, kendi hikâyesini kolektif bir deneyime dönüştürüyor. Anda gerçekleşen samimi, fiziksel ve şiirsel bir deneyim. Layla, diğer kadınlarla birlikte yüz metrelik bir kurdeleye işlediği kelimeleri sezgisel olarak seçti ve ortaya somut bir biyografi çıkardı. Layla, performans sırasında , sizi bu kurdeleyi, yani bir yaşam çizgisini, birlikte açmaya davet ediyor. Metin, hareket, ses ve katılımcıların birleştiği duyusal bir deneyim ortaya çıkıyor.

Layla Önlen (1978)

2023 yılında Maastricht Tiyatro Akademisi’nden mezun oldu. Çalışmalarında kişisel hikâyeleri evrensel, paylaşılan deneyimlere dönüştürüyor. Tekstile ve ritüellere olan derin hayranlığı, pratiğinde yinelenen bir unsur olan kırmızı kurdele ile hayat buluyor.
