"A concert experience that hasn't been on our stage before."
Songlines calls Abel Selaocoe "the most exciting musician in the world right now." With boundless energy and creativity, the South African cello sensation and (throat) singer manages to fuse African sounds with those of classical music. Everywhere he performs, he makes an indelible impression.
Musical direction: Hans Christian Aavik
Musical traditions melt together
This season, Selaocoe makes its debut with Amsterdam Sinfonietta. In a programme that highlights both early 20th-century French classical music and African musical traditions, he virtuosically navigates between Debussy, Ravel and his own compositions about South African life. At the same time, he explores the furthest reaches of the cello's sound spectrum.
The programme showcases Debussy's melancholic and mystical Cello Sonata in an arrangement for cello and string orchestra, the cello in all its facets. The orchestra shines in Ravel's masterful, swirling ode to the Viennese waltz, in a new arrangement for string orchestra. In addition, Selaocoe's own compositions will be heard, breathing the stories of South African life. Selaocoe is assisted by his regular musical partner, master percussionist Sidiki Dembélé. Trust us: no one will remain still in their seats at this spectacular concert conducted by Candida Thompson.
This is what our classical programmers Jos and Stijn say about this concert:
"South African cello sensation Abel Selaocoe is one of today's most innovative musicians. "Anyone who was at his concert will go home a different person," writes Belgian reviewer Katherina Lindekens about him. For Selaocoe, performing is not something one-sided but a form of cultural exchange; between audience and musicians, and between the traditions of his homeland with baroque, jazz, contemporary classical music and improvisation. He binds everything together in a concert experience that has never been on our stage before. There is no doubt that the meeting between the inimitable Abel Selaocoe and Amsterdam Sinfonietta will be a highlight not to be missed."
