A quest for true love.
Six singers, 12 instrumentalists and a dancer bring Mozart's 1782opera Die Entführung aus dem Serail to our Sunday morning Classical in Theater Kerkrade. This opera full of romantic and comic entanglements is set in an Ottoman harem.
The story of Mozart's kidnapping is about the Spanish nobleman Belmonte who wants to free his beloved Konstanze from the palace of the Ottoman Selim Pasha in Istanbul. This powerful and wealthy man, in search of true love, wants to marry Konstanze. But Konstanze has promised her fiancé eternal fidelity....
Ottoman culture really comes alive in this opera
In Mozart's time, people were fascinated by the exoticism of Oriental culture. But in the 18th century, little was known in Europe about the music of the Ottoman Empire. Mozart used the Turkish drum, bells and oriental rhythms. BarokOpera Amsterdam enriches the orchestra with ney, qanun and Turkish percussion and Selim Pasha gets newly composed arias. The direction, dance, sets and costumes are by Dutch-Turkish creators. So Ottoman culture really comes alive in this opera.
