In *Candide*, Leonard Bernstein sends his naïve protagonist on a bizarre journey full of love, war, disaster and unexpected encounters.
Candide grows up in a sheltered environment and believes that everything will turn out all right in the end. But when he falls in love with Cunegonde and is forced to leave the castle, his optimism is put to the test. During an adventurous journey around the world, he encounters war, the Inquisition, disease and deceit.
*Candide* is based on Voltaire’s famous satire. Leonard Bernstein, composer of *West Side Story*, turned it into a sharp and infectious blend of musical, operetta, Broadway and opera. Funny and exuberant, yet with a serious question beneath the surface: how do you remain optimistic when the world around you is anything but perfect?
Theater Aachen presents Candide in the 1974 Broadway version, featuring singers and musicians from the Cologne University of Music and Dance.
By bus to Opera Aachen
PLT will take you in comfort to Theater Aachen. You can board in Sittard, Heerlen or Kerkrade. After the performance, the bus will take you back. The bus journey is included in the ticket price.
