Brabo Leone
With her solo show Brabo Leone, Sarah Janneh embraces the richness of these dualities rather than choosing one over the other. In this musical performance, she looks back on the various phases of her turbulent life. A dose of self-reflection, resilience and the courage to be vulnerable help her gradually gain a foothold. A foothold in understanding how her past has shaped her life, and a foothold in what it means – given all the influences at play – to feel at home (somewhere). Her quest to discover what it means to belong takes her from the carnival in Brabant to the suburbs of Johannesburg and ultimately to her father’s home in Sierra Leone.
Following a sold-out theatre tour, a packed tent at Lowlands and its inclusion in the Cabaret collection of the Dutch Theatre Festival, Brabo Leone is returning in 2027. The show was nominated for no fewer than three theatre awards: the BNG Music Prize, the Music Theatre Prize and the Theo d’Or for the most groundbreaking stage performance. She is still in the running for another prestigious award, namely the Poelifinario.
Whether it wins an award or not, this is a 5-star show that you simply must see!
SPOORSNYDERS
One of the most inspiring people the team met whilst creating BRABO LEONE is the South African writer Ronelda S. Kamfer. Her poetry was a major source of inspiration.
The poem‘ ’ (SPOORSNYDERS ) was written especially for this project, following a number of conversations with Sarah.
"My body is not my own
it belongs to my ancestor
a woman who
her words
Mon corps ne m’appartient pas."
