Britten's timeless and poignant mass for all war dead.
The horrors of the two world wars in the last century were unprecedented. But even today we live in a time filled with the clash of arms. In 1962, Benjamin Britten completed a moving death mass for all war victims, then and now. He unpacked an imposing work for three vocal soloists, choirs, organ and large orchestra. For this monumental performance, Philzuid joined forces with the Groot Omroepkoor, Studium Chorale and Schola Puerorum to perform Britten's masterpiece. His War Requiem touches the heart and soul.
Coventry Cathedral
The trigger for Britten's requiem was the resurrected Coventry Cathedral, which had been badly hit during World War II. On 14 November 1940, almost all of Coventry was reduced to ashes by German bombing, including the monumental cathedral. By a miracle of God, however, the tower and spire had been preserved. By 1962, the new St Michael's Cathedral had finally been rebuilt and Britten's one-and-a-half-hour mass sounded at the official opening. It was soon clear that the War Requiem would become one of Britten's most important compositions.
Poetry by Wilfred Owen
As the basis for his War Requiem, Britten chose the Latin death mass. But the work is especially given wings by the brilliant poetry of poet and soldier Wilfred Owen. His personal, poignant poems leave nothing to the imagination. Owen was in the midst of the devastating trench battle during World War I and manages to penetrate deeply into the pain of this futile war. At a time when the Netherlands and the world are gleefully rearming, Britten's music and Owen's poetry lift a warning finger.
