Following its success at Cultura Nova, Opera Compact’s production of *Carmen* is coming to the Toon Hermans Theatre in Sittard. A new opportunity to experience Bizet’s world-famous opera up close: raw, passionate and stripped back to its essence.
Carmen
A story we think we know. About love, desire and jealousy. But beneath the surface lies something else. Directed by Eva Custers, the focus shifts to the clash between power and freedom. A clash in which no one can back down without losing themselves.
From the very first moment, there is an irresistible attraction between Carmen and Don José. What begins as desire takes a turn when that desire turns into possessiveness. Carmen chooses freedom. Don José cannot bear that choice. Love slowly turns into a power struggle. It is not romantic passion that leads to tragedy, but the inability to set the other free.
With a live ensemble, Opera Compact brings Georges Bizet’s compelling music to the stage in all its untamed and fiery glory. A compact production of *Carmen* in which you are right at the heart of the music, the singers and the drama.
