THE EXPLODING WHALE MUSICAL is a visual musical theatre production for everyone aged 8 to 108, centred around a lifelike whale. We see a village in the future. The village is situated on a patch of land surrounded by the sea, where the people have been fighting against the water for generations. The city walls and watchtowers completely separate the inhabitants from the water around them. Anything wet is forbidden. Every morning, the sea is spat upon and cursed, and anyone who has even the slightest connection to water is punished.

But then, one night, a gigantic creature washes ashore. A slug-like monster with wings and a breath that makes the ground tremble. Above all, it is: WET. The community sees the whale as a symbol of the Great Wet that must be conquered. For a beachcomber and a child, the whale’s arrival means something quite different. Can they convince their fellow villagers?

THE EXPLODING WHALE MUSICAL explores our relationship with water and everything that lives in it. Bold, poetic, funny and with a nod to everything a musical can be, the show tells a contemporary story: about kinship and about what it means to truly care for someone – or something.
