De Kift
De Kift is not a band, but a musical ensemble. For 38 years now, this group from the Zaan region has been blending punk, pop, theatre and brass band music into something unique, with lyrics that could just as easily come from world literature as from a pub conversation. Moving the audience whilst simultaneously unleashing a party – that is their trademark, and the two rarely come so close together as in their new production, *De eenzame*.
The performance is set between two albums: following *Niemandsland*, released in 2024, and ahead of the fourteenth studio album due out in 2027. On stage, a drifter who just can’t seem to reach the sea: “He wanted to set off for the sea, but never made it to the station.” Surrounding him are film clips and drawings, old and new material, familiar faces and new characters. Music that De Kift haven’t played for a long time, alongside songs that haven’t yet been released on record.
Since their formation in 1988, they’ve continued to surprise us consistently: thirteen studio albums, collaborations with Rats on Rafts, Calexico, Franz Ferdinand and Sanne den Hartogh, and an album packaged in twenty cut-up postcards. On stage are Ferry, Wim, Mathijs, Pim, Patrick, Roos and Marco, playing instruments ranging from the bass tuba and baritone to the chopping board and ukulele. Seven people, one band.
