What can art do for the growing confusion and loss of orientation in our time? Brazilian choreographer Samir Calixto, whose work can be seen at PLT during schrit_tmacher this year, answers this question with performances that zoom out; looking for a broader perspective that shows the bigger picture and deeper connections.
Reflection on the dynamics of opposing forces
For his new production DESCENT※ASCENT, Calixto continues his collaboration with the Cello Octet Amsterdam. In 2018, they created the performance SUMMA together to compositions by Arvo Pärt. DESCENT※ASCENT features the music of another Baltic composer, Latvian-born Pēteris Vásks. Vasks' compositions are a musical reflection on the dynamics of opposing forces. Like the eternal repetition of the tides or the unstoppable oscillation between higher and lower, the sacred and the mundane, good and evil. Especially in a world that is increasingly extreme polarisation, it is important to nuance the handling of opposites.
In DESCENT※ASCENT, the eight cellists of the Cello Octet Amsterdam together with dancers from the prestigious German dance company Of Curious Nature form a collective, almost ritualistic encounter in which audience and performers are one. Together, they try to reconcile their own human paradoxes.
