Do we spend our time enough on what we really love?
Percussionist DOMNIQ, the Marmen Quartet and composer Samuel Adams explore the many ways in which time and space can shape a concert for string quartet and percussion. The third concert by our artist in residence Time is how you spend your love thus moves freely between core repertoire for string quartet and solo works for percussion, and moments when the two come together; linked by themes of repetition, resonance, devotion and obsession.
Perspectives on time
Central to the programme are Adams' works for this adventurous line-up: Sundial, which evokes a dreamy soundscape, and Devotions; an instrumental cantata in seven movements that builds on the form and expressive language of Olivier Messiaen's Quatuor pour la fin du temps.
The programme also opens up other perspectives on time. In Rebonds, Iannis Xenakis approaches rhythm as a physical and architectural force. From his background as an architect, he conceived music as a construction in space, in which layers of sound unfold as structures and time takes shape through weight, density and direction. From the light-permeable sound world of Haydn's Sunrise Quartet and the fragile, hushed world of Cassandra Miller's Leaving to the organic world of DOMNIQ's Lantana, the programme moves through different experiences of time. To return each time to the question of how music can stretch, still and transform our experience of time.
