St Francis wants to become a famous knight, but it doesn't work out as planned. After this failure, he follows his heart and radically changes his life. Francis of Assisi lived around 1200 and the musical written by Bas and Cissy Suijkerbuijk for the Franciscan jubilee year shows him as human, vulnerable, full of humour and full of fire. Outstanding music, dance and polyphonic choral movements bring us closer to Francis' inner struggle and spiritual liberation. We see a man who discovers that true wealth comes from simplicity, love and peace. An ancient story that is still recognisable even after 800 years.

St Francis of Assisi

Francis is a young man from a wealthy family in Assisi, a town in central Italy. He lives around the year 1200 and his father is a cloth merchant who does good business. Francis enjoys the good life to the full and dreams of becoming a famous knight. But things turn out differently than expected. From a dark dungeon, his journey into a new existence begins - a path that leads him past war and fear, but also past visions, miracles and God's voice calling him to something greater.

The anniversary of St Francis

In the musical written by Bas and Cissy Suijkerbuijk especially for the Francis jubilee year, we follow Francis in the key moments of his life: the encounter with the leper that opens his heart, the mission in San Damiano that turns his life around, the building of a new community, his journey to the Sultan in the East and finally the profound simplicity of the first nativity scene in Greccio. This family musical is a magnificent, warm-hearted and inspiring musical for young and old: an ode to humanity, faith, vulnerability, the cross and the courage to make a new start.
