Solitude by Alexei Ratmansky
A recent addition to the HNB repertoire is Solitude, a moving work in which Associate Artist Alexei Ratmansky shines his light on the suffering caused by war. To this end, he was inspired by a newspaper photo of a Ukrainian father holding the hand of his son killed in a Russian attack for hours. To two Mahler compositions, Ratmansky manages to make universal human grief palpable with abstract, penetrating dance.
New work by Kirsten Wicklund
Young Canadian choreographer Kirsten Wicklund explores the theme of gender equality in a new creation. The occasion is the celebration, in 2026, of 25 years of same-sex marriage. Wicklund bases her latest production on composer Willem Jeths' 2011 musical ode with vocals to same-sex marriage. The vocal parts are performed by young singers from The National Opera Studio.
Simple Things by Hans van Manen
As he has done in all his ballets, Hans van Manen zooms in on human relationships in Simple Things. In the vibrant opening and closing movements, two men whip each other up in two duets that sparkle. In between, they let themselves be distracted by two women, who challenge them to a fleeting romance.
Symphony in C by George Balanchine
The fourth choreographer, George Balanchine, has basically spent his entire life reflecting on the purely classical, French-Russian style of ballet he grew up with. In his Symphony in C , he pays homage to its splendour. But he injected the dance with zest and schwung, culminating in a finale that bubbles and fizzes like a glass of champagne.
