A tour de force with the 'Mount Everest' of piano literature as its virtuoso highlight: Franz Liszt's Sonata in b minor.

The still-young French pianist Jonathan Fournel is among the world's greatest pianists. In 2021, he won the Queen Elisabeth Piano Competition. Since then, he has been conquering international concert stages with his powerful, then velvety touch. In Heerlen, he will play a true tour de force, taking you from the architectural perfection of the Baroque to the absolute masterpieces of the Romantic era.

The programme

Fournel opens with Bach's Passacaglia and Fugue. This work is considered a monument of symmetry and power. This is followed by Schubert's lyrical, almost melancholic Four Impromptus, op. 90: from the mournful march-like first impromptu to the rippling waterfalls of the fourth. Pure poetry.

The musical journey continues with two works by Chopin: after the serene, flowing Andante Spianato, Fournel excels with the technical fireworks of the Grande Polonaise Brillante. Elegant and unprecedentedly virtuosic. To conclude with Liszt's Sonata in b minor; an epic story without words that takes you past all emotions from devotion to fury. It is the 'Mount Everest' of piano literature. And that climb is entrusted to Fournel.
