A moving, visually rich performance about heritage, memories and healing for children aged 8+ and anyone with questions about 'the old days'.
Sometimes it feels like a storm lives in Novi's chest. No one knows why. And she herself certainly doesn't. One day, when the storm rages again, Novi flees into the attic. An old, dusty place full of boxes of yellowed photos. But then a strange thing happens: two mysterious figures appear and disappear again, each in a different photo book. Novi jumps after them, diving into her family's hidden stories.
A magical journey back in time
Through old photo books, letters and forgotten melodies, Novi travels back in time, to a past that is slowly coming to life. What begins as a playful exploration grows into a magical journey through her family history. And through that family history to a shared colonial past of the Netherlands and Indonesia that is still resonating in the present. Along the way, Novi discovers that the anger she feels may be older than herself. That emotions can travel, from heart to heart, from generation to generation. And that understanding sometimes starts with looking, listening and feeling.
Studio Figur and Dawn Collective
Studio Figur and Dawn Collective join forces in this immersive theatre experience with puppetry, live cinema and music about origins and identity. Creator Noufri Bachdim weaved his personal family history into the story with the shared colonial legacy of the Netherlands and Indonesia. His two grandfathers fought on opposite sides in the war of independence: one in the Indonesian army, the other in the KNIL. Their children found each other in love, and from that connection Noufri was born.
