In de voetsporen van Toon
With Toon’s authentic dressing room as the backdrop – complete with cough sweets, insoles, a kettle, jackets, ties and tanning cream – journalists Nick Bruls and Paul Dolhain speak to guests who knew or studied the Sittard-born artist. All this is interspersed with the most memorable moments from Toon Hermans’ famous one-man shows and his songs, performed by Lissa Meyvis, Cyrille Niël, Siebe Palmen and Sam Verhoeven, accompanied by the Ton-sur-Toon orchestra. Keyboardist Erik Vlasblom was a member of Toon’s backing band for many years, Guido Snoeck worked alongside the grand master behind the scenes as stage manager at the Arenberg Theatre in Antwerp; Lisa Wade graduated cum laude with a thesis on Toon’s image; and acclaimed director Servé Hermans analyses the unrivalled facial expressions and timing of the Netherlands’ greatest artist of the last century.
The theatre adaptation of the successful podcast
The theatre show stems from the successful podcast ‘Kolder… In de voetsporen van Toon’, which Bruls and Dolhain produced in 2025 to mark the 25th anniversary of his death for De Limburger, in collaboration with the Toon Hermans Foundation. Over nine episodes, they sketched out Toon’s life by visiting places that were important to him and talking to family, friends and colleagues.
Last year, Bruls and Dolhain took to the stage for the first time with a theatre adaptation of the podcast at a sold-out Toon Hermans Theatre.
Reviewer Ivar Hoekstra wrote about this show: ‘When Niël sang the song “Ik ben iemand van een kleine stad”, which then segued into the Limburg anthem, you could feel the love for Hermans rippling through the theatre. Toon was the unifying force that evening: the audience felt as one. The combination of singing, storytelling and video ensured that the evening, despite lasting a good 2½ hours, flew by.’
