The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra will play in Heerlen, conducted by Fabio Luisi, with one of the world's leading violinists, Julia Fischer. The German does not come along lightly. Ten years ago, she already played a mesmerising and technically superior performance of Hans Werner HenzesIl Vitalino raddoppiato. In 2026, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra will bring this work back to the stage to mark the 100th anniversary of the German composer's birth; with a starring role for Julia and in combination with Brahms' lyrical Symphony no. 2.
Enchanting and thrilling
Hans Werner Henze (1926-2012) doubled Tomaso Antonio Vitali's famousChaconne in g minorfor violin and basso continuo in Il Vitalino raddoppiato. Known as virtuoso for the soloist, the work contains many variations and dramatic developments. It enchants and brings you to the edge of your seat.
Sunny and lovely
Johannes Brahms composed his Second symphony, also called his Pastoral , in 1877 during a sun-drenched stay in the Austrian mountains. And you can hear that: the work sounds cheerful, positive and lovely and is characterised by sunny atmospheres, cello melodies and a powerful finale.
As an amuse, the RCO plays a phrase from Diphylleia Grayi; a new work by young Danish composer and violinist Sophie Søs Meyer that will be premiered in Amsterdam on 9 December.
