Two composers, one phenomenal top orchestra
With music by Sibelius and Grieg, the London Symphonic Orchestra presents a melodramatic programme that takes musicians and audiences together to the far north of Scandinavia. From both composers, this phenomenal top orchestra plays its own favourites: Sibelius' First Symphony and Grieg's beloved Piano Concerto. As an intermezzo, Birds of Paradise II by the young Swedish composer Andrea Torrodo will be performed .

The romantic side of Sibelius
The beauty of the Finnish landscape, the endless forests and lakes: this is the image that Sibelius' First Symphony conjures up. This late-Romantic masterpiece houses the very best melodies Sibelius ever wrote. Its intense, emotional, melodic style still clearly shows the influence of Tchaikovsky, whom Sibelius deeply admired: "There is much in that man that I recognise in myself," Sibelius wrote after hearing Tchaikovsky'sPathétique symphony. So expect very drawn-out melodies, where it's wonderful to dream away.
A highlight of Scandinavian romanticism
Benjamin Grosvenor will solo in Edvard Grieg's timeless Piano Concerto. This work heavily influenced by Norwegian folk music influences is known for its close and lyrical interplay between piano and orchestra. Grieg thus combines virtuosity with emotional depth. It is not only a technical masterpiece, but also a passionate expression of Scandinavian romanticism, making it the perfect counterpart to Sibelius' First.
London Philharmonic Orchestra
Founded in 1932, the London Philharmonic Orchestra is known worldwide for its exciting live performances. The orchestra, which comes to Heerlen under conductor Anja Bihlmaier, is the regular performer at the Royal Festival Hall in London, among other venues. The orchestra can be heard in numerous film soundtracks and has released more than 130 albums on its own LPO label. Benjamin Grosvenor
British pianist Benjamin Grosvenor won the piano final of the BBC Young Musician Competition at 11. At 19, he first soloed at the BBC Proms. Not long after, he signed with record label Decca and has since won every prize a pianist dreams of. "The real deal" the Financial Times once called him, and he plays often and gladly in our country, both as a soloist and in collaboration with major international orchestras.
