Mary Jane

A loving portrait of parenthood and hope.

After A Case for the Existence of God and Hamlet, director Erik Whien brings the acclaimed play Mary Jane to PLT; translated by by Kim van Kooten, starring Charlie Chan Dagelet.

A single mother, Mary Jane, cares for her chronically ill son Alex. Between the beeping monitors, sleepless nights and hospital visits, she endures their daily reality with unwavering dedication. Gradually, she finds support from a community of different women in her area. This creates a network around her in which each, from their own philosophy of life, background and motive, cares for another.

Unconditional care and humanity

Mary Jane is a play about resilience, unconditional care and the importance of compassion. It is the latest play by successful American playwright Amy Herzog. The story is semi-autobiographical and reflects her personal experiences with her daughter's illness. At its first performance in New York, it received immediate praise from press and audiences (Tony Award nomination, Best Play 2024).

Mary Jane can also be seen at Theater aan het Vrijthof in Maastricht on 6 April.

About Erik Whien

Director Erik Whien is known for his crystal-clear directing, in which he propels his actors to unprecedented heights. His performances are sophisticated, psychological portraits of man in all his impotence: complex, recognisable and loving. From 2016, he has been part of Theater Rotterdam's permanent producer ensemble. His performances End Game, Revolutionary Road, Slaughterhouse Five and A Case for the Existence of God were selected for the Dutch Theatre Festival.
