Table of Five Music Theatre brings Mata Hari to life. For over 100 years, her name has evoked images of mystery, freedom and resistance. She was a world-famous dancer, was accused of espionage during WWI and died before the firing squad. Who was she and what does her story tell us today?
Mata Hari Returns also tells the story of her daughter Nonnie. In life, mother and daughter barely saw each other. While Mata Hari, like a pop icon, sings herself free from the image others projected on her, Nonnie tries to make sense of her mother's bizarre life. She has always heard the story about her mother from others. In it, Mati Hari was portrayed as seductive and dangerous. Even now, this frame is still stuck on many women in the (social) media. Especially when they threaten to become too successful. Has nothing changed, then?
Raw, honest, poetic musical theatre
Table of Five Music Theatre tells both women's stories because they see the need. Because they feel the insecurity that young women today also experience. That is why writer Melissa Knollenburg and director Nita Kersten bring them to the here and now. From their female perspective and need: raw, honest, poetic and full of fire. A live played rousing and moving soundtrack, driven by percussion, electronics, electric guitar and bass carries the story, makes it move and chafe.
Pop-up exhibition
From Leeuwarden to the former Dutch East Indies, to the firing squad in France. Mata Hari Returns is a journey through time and through the soul of a woman who was always seen, but rarely really heard. All visitors to the show will start in the theatre with a tour of the
pop-up exhibition, co-developed by Museum Huis Doorn and the Fries Museum
Leeuwarden. The expo provides insight into the past and places Mata Hari's life in a social and historical context.
