Two beloved works by Edward Clug and Crystal Pite and world premiere by Johan Inger.
NDT 2 pays tribute to the playfulness and humanity that characterises the company's dancers. The evening brings together Edward Clug's Mutual Comfort (2015) and Four Solitudes by associate choreographer Crystal Pite with live accompaniment by The Ballet Orchestra. It will also feature a world premiere by celebrated creator Johan Inger.
Mutual comfort by Edward Clug
Edward Clug created the playful world of mutual comfort (2015) for NDT 2. "The title of this work describes exactly how I experienced the creation process at NDT. In just 10 minutes, it shows the essence of my entire dance universe," Clug said. Set to a composition played live by Milko Lazar, we see how the dancers explore the connection with each other and how that connection provides comfort and support. Moments of unexpected beauty, subtle humour and detailed movements alternate, creating a work to be enjoyed in peace.
Four Solitudes by Crystal Pite
Pite: "Rilke wrote that love consists of 'solitude protecting, bounding and greeting each other'. Love, in this sense, can connect and carry us to each other without our individuality disappearing. Four Solitudes is fuelled by that tension: we can stand firmly in our own solitude and at the same time be virtuosic in being together." Schubert's piano sonata, performed live on stage, gives voice to Pite's love for dancers, for the dance and for the beautiful music that sets them in motion.
World premiere by Johan Inger
Choreographer Johan Inger has been creating for NDT for more than three decades. His work is strongly linked to musicality, the relationship between people and emotional presence. As Inger himself puts it, "I see a creation as a collaborative process, where individuality, vulnerability and the joy of dancing together are all equally important." Instead of looking back, this new work, created in collaboration with the NDT 2 dancers, is about listening, exchanging and discovering how movement can embody who we are today.
