In 2025, Nikola Meeuwsen became the first Dutch pianist to win the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels. Immediately afterwards, we saw this promising piano talent on our concert stage in a duo recital with his coach Enrico Pace. Now, 24-year-old Nikola returns for a solo recital with an impressive programme.
He opens with Bach’s famous Ciaccona, in a unique arrangement by Johannes Brahms for the left hand alone. This is followed by Ravel’s colourful *Le tombeau de Couperin*. After the interval, Nikola continues with Mendelssohn’s intense *Variations sérieuses* and concludes with Beethoven’s *Appassionata*: technical fireworks and pure drama.

In his recital in Heerlen, Nikola demonstrates just how rich and versatile the piano can sound. From the clear lines of Bach to the refined colours of Ravel. From the gravity and tension in Mendelssohn to the fiery power of Beethoven.
Bach’s Ciaccona was originally written for solo violin, but Brahms created an impressive piano arrangement of it for the left hand. An intimate yet grand opening. Ravel’s *Le tombeau de Couperin* brings elegance, lightness and French refinement. With Mendelssohn’s *Variations sérieuses*, Nikola delves into the depths, after which Beethoven’s *Appassionata* brings the recital to a close with one of the most dramatic and technically demanding piano sonatas in the history of music.
