In Storm, dance company OFFprojects, Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw and Shabaka Hutchings celebrate the unpredictable power of life. Jazz and contemporary dance come together in a turbulent tour de force that invites you to embrace the spontaneous.

For Storm , British composer and multi-instrumentalist Shabaka Hutchings and OFFprojects choreographer Amos Ben-Tal both draw inspiration from the minimalism of composers like Terry Riley and the pattern-based music of Southern Uganda. Both Ben-Tal's dancers and jazz musicians move between set phrases and improvised exploration, making each performance different. After all, the best things usually happen in the unexpected? This will be a special evening for music and dance lovers alike.

A special collaboration

From the birth of jazz, the genre has been inextricably linked to dance. Jazz was the dance music of the early last century: lively, rhythmic and meant to move to. With Storm, OFFprojects, Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw and Shabaka Hutchings reach back to this original energy. Here, the poetic movement language of dance company OFFprojects meets the dynamism, originality and craftsmanship of Shabaka Hutchings and the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw.

About the makers

OFFprojects is a Hague-based dance company of former dancers from renowned companies such as NDT, Batsheva and Hofesh Shechter Company. The company led by choreographer and musician Amos Ben-Tal is known for their out-of-the-box approach to dance, breathtaking dancers and exciting interdisciplinary collaborations.

The Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw consists of world-class Dutch jazz musicians. The big band ranks among the top in Europe, won several Edison Awards and has previously collaborated with jazz legends such as Chick Corea, Dr Lonnie Smith and Joshua Redman.

A central figure of the London jazz renaissance, Shabaka Hutchings distances himself from the strict "jazz" label and draws inspiration from many sources: from calypso and hip-hop to his classical training in London. For his latest work Perceive its Beauty, Acknowledge its Grace, he drew inspiration from spiritual jazz and the traditional music of Barbados.
