Water and time are the lifelines of this special programme, through which Dominique calls attention to the fragility of the Amazon.
Within his residency at PLT, we will see percussionist Dominique Vleeshouwers on our stage three times. In his first performance on 26 September, he delved into the primal rhythm of Stravinsky's Sacre and works by Takemitsuduring the opening of the 2026-2027 theatre season with Philzuid . In his second concert he and his own DOMINIQ GROUP surround Águas da Amazônia by Philip Glass, who turns 90 this year, with new compositions and sound worlds.
The Amazon flows, shimmers and fizzes.
Philip Glass wrote Águas da Amazônia in 1999 for the Brazilian ensemble Uakti. "This piece makes the Amazon's urgency for life on earth palpable. This is where time is pressing," Dominique says in our theatre brochure. "What is special," he continues, "is that we were allowed to create a new score with the composer's permission."
Led by Dominique, the ensemble of three percussionists, a flautist and a violinist creates a musical universe around Glass's masterpiece, bringing together innovative percussion, home-made instruments such as the slapaphone, electronics, lighting design and traditional instruments from different cultures. Water and time are the lifelines of this extraordinary programme, through which Dominique calls attention to the fragility of the Amazon. What lingers and what resonates, when the spring dries up and the stream stills?
