A unique encounter between dance from the LA ghettos and Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony.
PLT together with schrit_tmacher presents the Dutch premiere of REVOLTA. A performance in which two radically opposing worlds merge: that of krump - a hip-hop dance style that originated in the suburbs of Los Angeles - and that of one of the greatest masterpieces in music history: Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony. From the fusion comes an incredibly energetic performance, which is both a classical concert and a dance performance with unprecedented musical power.
Unconventional and innovative
Driving forces behind this unconventional crossover, which can finally be seen in the Netherlands, are iconic French choreographer Kader Attou and the Geneva Camerata led by David Greilsammer. On stage, four krump dancers mingle with the orchestra's instrumentalists.
Krump is an acronym for Kingdom Radically Uplifted Mighty Praise. This highly expressive and intense style embodies a raw and instinctive energy. This same rawness also features Shostakovich's emotionally and politically charged Fifth, which depicts the struggle of the individual in an oppressive regime. The musicians play the music from memory and in movement, interacting with the dancers. Together, they explore current social themes such as tolerance, courage and freedom in a collective choreography.
Battle Zone
As a supporting act, you will see and hear Battle Zone, a new work composed especially forREVOLTA by young composer Alexandre Mastrangelo. Performed by the Geneva Camerata, this piece also draws inspiration from hip-hop and urban cultures.
