  • out of 5 stars Theatre newspaper
"Comforting music theatre that invites contemplation on youth and adulthood."
  • out of 5 stars Gonzo
"No words of unctuous pity, but sharp observations, and music that gave voice to the maelstrom in her mind and her longing for peace ... perfectly matched the deeply felt vulnerability of the performance."
  • out of 5 stars Soundhole
"Comforting look back at childhood in Bach worthy fugue of image and sound overwhelmingly designed."

A sensory performance about trauma, identity and healing.

S.A.M. (Stop Annoying Me) is a moving trip through the thoughts and feelings of 16-year-old Sam, who feels out of place in this world. Film, live music and performance come together in an immersive, multidisciplinary performance about depression and (re)finding your own identity in a world that feels hostile.

On stage, we see the main character Sam as a 16-year-old, razor-sharp interpreted on film by singer Nina Kortekaas. And we see her adult self, played live by mezzo-soprano Els Mondelaers. The performance offers a glimpse into Sam's soul when her younger self and willfully forgotten memories unexpectedly impose themselves on her. In that moment, the adult Sam is confronted with the fears of her youth; feelings of alienation, loneliness and misunderstanding are revived.

Is it you against the world? Or your body against itself?

Is it you against your body? Or the world against you?

Musicians colour Sam's world with live music ranging from electronic pop and contemporary classical to dark, alienating soundscapes. Past and present blend subtly and are musically supported by cellist Jacqueline Hamelink and violinist Claire Adams. This creates an intense musical journey, where memories and inner voices intertwine, and where trauma and recovery become palpable.

It's never too late to embrace the past.
