A visually rich and emotionally charged multimedia performance about the beauty and vulnerability of our oceans.
After Anima Obscura , Nanine Linning and her international artistic team once again create an overwhelming total experience. La Mer is a visually rich and emotionally charged multimedia performance about the beauty and vulnerability of our oceans.
Reflection
Linning based La Mer on Claude Debussy's grand and iconic La Mer (1905) and his choral work Sirènes. With her 25 dancers, Linning contrasts the naive-romantic imagination of the sea from Debussy's time with the harsh reality of today, shaped by rising sea levels and pollution. The performance thus invites reflection on our own actions.
A mysterious, flowing world
La Mer is an immersive hybrid of dance, music, couture and video art that touches both physically and intellectually. Yannis Kyriakides' cinematic music offers a contemporary counterpart to Debussy's symphony. His sound compositions were written for the phenomenal soprano Barbara Hannigan. Media artist Heleen Blanken's digital stage design and more
more than 80 durable costumes by Japanese haute-couture designer Yuima Nakazato transform the stage into a mysterious, fluid world where beauty and menace go hand in hand.
