Three magical rituals with our artist-in-residence.
Le Sacre du Printemps by Russian composer Igor Stravinsky is one of the most revolutionary works ever written. At the season opening of Heerlen Theatre, Philzuid combines this milestone with a spectacular work by Toru Takemitsu - with five percussionists under the direction of Dominique Vleeshouwers. Dominique Vleeshouwers will be Artist in Residence at PLT in the 2026-2027 theatre season; on three occasions, the percussionist will demonstrate his great talent and versatility.
Stravinsky's majestic spring offering
In 1913, the still young Stravinsky completed his masterpiece in collaboration with the choreographer Vaslav Nijinsky. The ballet and the music caused a controversial premiere. The pagan dance ritual, in which a young girl dances herself to death in front of the gods, met with a great response from the distinguished Parisian audience. The dance-like primal rhythm and the emotional, melodic tonal language of theSacre inspired countless composers thereafter. And even today, the unrivalled power of Stravinsky's majestic Rite of Spring captivates the imagination. Its asymmetrical, pounding rhythms strike deep into the soul.
Debussy's Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune
Stravinsky's big bang is accompanied in this concert by two related, ritualistic orchestral works. The atmospheric rainbow colours of Claude Debussy's Préludeà l'après-midi d'un faune illuminate an unheard-of dream world. This major work by Debussy is pure impressionistic music, music full of colour nuances that should be experienced live above all else
Takemitsu's From me flows what you call time
Another experience is the percussion spectacleFromme flows what you call time by the Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu. In his work, Takemitsu combines the Zen spirit of Japanese music with the Western classical tradition and impressionism. In the workFromme flows what you call time, which he wrote in 1990 for the centenary celebrations of Carnegie Hall New York, the five percussionists represent the elements of nature: water, fire, earth, wind and air. The entire hall is immersed in a magical sound ritual. Five percussionists under the direction of specialist Dominique Vleeshouwers take up the challenge together with Philzuid.
