A tribute to the symphonic narrative art of Russian tone masters Rachmaninov and Prokofiev.

During an evening of romance à la Russe , Philzuid honours the symphonic narrative art of the great Russian masters Rachmaninov and Prokofiev.

The Symphonic Dances written by Sergei Rachmaninov in 1940-41 proved to be this great Russian composer's last creative salute to the world. One more time he stretched his mighty wings and reached for the sky with a romantic seduction dance of the highest order. The composer, who had fled from Europe, was living in the US at the time and had become addicted to fast-paced modern life there. In his three-movement Symphonic Dances, his time-honoured, lush romanticism is given a streamlined performance. Compelling cinematic music that pricks up ears and eyes.

Sergei Prokofiev also brims with compelling narratives. One of his most impressive works is the lyrical cello masterpiece Sinfonia Concertante. Prokofiev surprised everyone with this grand mix between symphony and cello concerto with Ivan Karizna as soloist. Colleagues Gidon Kremer and András Schiff have nothing but praise for this treble cello rock star. Schiff calls him "One of the best cellists of his generation."
