An intimate relationship drama in a world of violence.
Firma Mes is known for their unique, in-depth theatre documentaries in which they open up closed worlds. In Weapons, we follow Raya and Iris: a young couple pregnant with their first child. Raya works in the defence industry, making sure the Netherlands stays safe. When Raya discovers that the weapon she is working on is more dangerous than her company is willing to admit, their relationship comes under painful strain. How do you stick together when the truth comes between you?
The hidden world of defence and arms trade
The Netherlands is one of the world's biggest arms exporters. Billions worth of military goods and technology cross its borders every year. While genocide, war and climate threats dominate the news on a daily basis, our economy runs unabated. How clear is our conscience? What if moral boundaries shift ever so slightly further?
Theatre maker Nic Bruckman is an expert in turning in-depth research into emotional theatre. For this, he and Firma Mes delved into diplomacy(The Untouchables), the civil service(The Fourth Power) and Big Pharma(Medicine). Based on solid journalistic research, Weapons sheds penetrating light on the hidden world of defence and arms trade: with the humour, wryness and stratification we know from Firma Mes and Nic Bruckman Projects. And with Theo d'Or nominee Nadia Amin and Roos Eijmers, a new play by Nic Bruckman, directed by Thomas Schoots.
