J.S. Bach - Weihnachtsoratorium
Ad Mosam BarokExternal venue - Sint-Petruskerk Sittard
Christmas music to experience together.
With the Christmas Oratorio, Ad Mosam Barok presents one of the most beloved works in music history. For almost three centuries, this work has been the musical heart of Christmas for many. Ad Mosam Barok brings it to life on ancient instruments and in the authentic mood. A moment to listen, share and celebrate together.
A story in six parts
Bach's Christmas Oratorio tells the story of the birth of Jesus in six separate cantatas. From the census in Bethlehem to the adoration by the Magi. Bach did not compose the movements to sound in succession, but to be performed scattered during the various holidays of the Christmas season. This is precisely why each movement has its own character as the larger story slowly unfolds.
A story of hope
What makes the Weihnachtsoratorium so special is the way Bach brings the Christmas story to life musically. The exuberant joy of the opening chorus Jauchzet, frohlocket is juxtaposed with intimate moments of calm and emotion. Grand choruses and personal emotions alternate. This makes the Christmas Oratorio more than a religious work: it is a story about hope, expectation and solidarity. Music that invites you to listen together, be silent together and celebrate together.
