He who suffers pain, passes on pain.

ITA's Wuthering Heights foreshadows not a romantic love story, but a look at what power does to people. About how pain leads to more pain, how those who are trampled learn to trample. Directed by Kjersti Horn and played by the ITA Ensemble, Wuthering Heights becomes a raw, physical performance about class, desire and the cycle of violence passed down from generation to generation.

The story of Heathcliff and Catherine

Wuthering Heights tells the story of Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw. Heathcliff, a foundling taken in by the Earnshaw family, grows up in a world of passion, jealousy and social tension. A deep bond develops between him and Catherine, but their love is undermined by pride, class and social expectations. Heathcliff is the outsider who is never truly accepted. When he returns as a rich man, he takes revenge. But revenge does not free him. Scarred by humiliation, he has learned to reproduce the violence that once shaped him. The oppressed becomes oppressor. Catherine is caught in another structure. Torn between her love for Heathcliff and the expectations of the world around her, she chooses what is expected of her. She betrays her heart by following the path laid out for her and pays a crushing price for it.

Kjersti Horn

ITA's new director Kjersti Horn (NO) is considered one of the innovators of Scandinavian theatre. Her work explores themes of power, marginalisation and vulnerability, often from a feminist and social perspective. With Wuthering Heights, she explores systems of oppression that we also recognise in our own time. The story exposes that we all play a role in a larger system of ruler and oppressed. Positions shift, but the cycle of violence remains.
