The infinite sea as a dreamed sounding board for the great British composers.
The mysterious call of the sea echoes all over Britain. As a British composer, you therefore pull out all the stops to express the story of that swirling and all-embracing ocean. And that is exactly what happens in this concert programme full of seaworthy, British sound poetry led by conductor Alejo Pérez.
Welsh composer Grace Williams' popular string orchestral work Sea Sketches is an ode to the comforting life by the sea. Edward Elgar even dedicated the entire song cycle Sea Pictures to the infinite sea; in all its fickleness, danger, temptations and incredible splendour. To this end, the versatile Brazilian mezzo-soprano Josy Santos plays a starring role in this concert.
A breathtaking serenade
The sea was also an immeasurable source of inspiration for Benjamin Britten. His Four Sea Interludes for orchestra from his best-known opera Peter Grimes are about the decline of a raucous sea dog within a close-knit village community. In the final movement Storm, you can hear the inner struggle of the unrepentant sailor. As is often the case, Benjamin Britten excels in unadulterated, truthful poetry and classical sophistication. It all comes together in his exceptional Serenade for tenor, horn and strings. In it, Britten astounds with an extraordinary fusion of a horn concerto and a song cycle, sung by American power tenor Brett Sprague. He is completely at home in Britten's repertoire. Together with Peter Hoeben - first hornist of Philzuid - he performs a breathtaking serenade to the night and endless dreams.
