Philzuid welcomes summer with sun-warmed orchestral music by Barber, Copland and Stravinsky.
Philzuid closes the classical season at PLT with warm-blooded orchestral sounds. In this summer programme, American masters Samuel Barber and Aaron Copland combine symphonic sound drama with salutary harmonies. To crown the summer, Stravinsky's Symphony in Three Movementswill be played next .
Appalachian Spring Suite
In Appalachian Spring Suite, Copland pulls out all the sensitive stops for the Pulitzer Prize-winning music he wrote for a work by pioneering choreographer Martha Graham. Her 1944 ballet depicts a wedding party taking place in a nineteenth-century Shaker community. The ecstatic music stirs, then and now.
Knoxville, Summer of 1915
Martha Graham also managed to snare Barber for a ballet score. In their Medea, a furious dance full of resentment and revenge unfolds. But how different is the atmosphere in the picturesque Knoxville, Summer of 1915 for soprano and orchestra; here long, languid summer evenings and endless childhood dreams reign. Mezzo-soprano and Grammy winner Julia Bullock is extraordinarily familiar with the American repertoire. This top mezzo previously sang Barber's Knoxville with the LA Philharmonic and London Philharmonia.
Symphony in Three Movements
To crown the summer will be Stravinsky's Symphony in Three Movements. A dazzling tour de force with which the famous Russian made his debut in his new homeland, the USA. Stravinsky perfected his sparkling vision of the great classical tradition with a symphony bursting with pure solar energy.
