The acclaimed Vox Luminis with one of the highlights of English music.
Henry Purcell wrote his famous opera Dido and Aeneas in 1688. The highlight in this masterpiece is undoubtedly the intensely sad final aria Dido's Lament, which opens with the words Whem I am laid in earth. The widely acclaimed Belgian ensemble Vox Luminis brings the tragic love story of Dido and Aeneas to life in a semi-concert performance with the emotional depth and drama that Henry Purcell gave to his masterpiece.
Ode on the Death of a Queen
This intense performance of Dido and Aeneas is followed by songs from Purcell's Ode on the Death of a Queen. Tip: at this concert, note the special working method of this ensemble, in which conductor, also baritone Lionel Meunier sets the musical lines from within the choir.
Vox Luminis
Led by founder, artistic director Lionel Meunier, the Belgian ensemble Vox Luminis is built around voices that can both shine solo and merge into one luminescent whole. Depending on the repertoire, the vocal core is supplemented by continuo, solo instruments or the ensemble's own orchestra. The musical spectrum covers mainly English, Italian and German works from the 17th and early 18th centuries - from virtuoso masterpieces to forgotten gems.
In 2012, Vox Luminis won both the Gramophone Classical Music Award for Recording of the Year and the Baroque Vocal Award for Schütz' Musikalische Exequien. This was followed in 2019 by the Choral Award for Buxtehude: Abendmusiken. Other awards include the 'Klara Ensemble of the Year 2018', a BBC Music Magazine Award, several Diapasons d'Or, the Caecilia Prize and several awards from the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik. Vox Luminis has been associated with the Concertgebouw Brugge since 2017 and has its residency at the Abbaye Musicale de Malonne in Namur.
