Grand opening
On 18 September, the curtain will rise once again at Filmhuis de Spiegel. Following the closure of our familiar venue on 1 June, we will be welcoming our audience for the first time to the Kleine Zaal at Theater Heerlen. A special moment that we would love to celebrate together.
This first film evening marks not only the reopening of Filmhuis de Spiegel, but also the start of a new and close collaboration with PLT. Together, we are joining forces to ensure that film continues to have a prominent place in Heerlen in the years to come and to keep reaching both new and familiar audiences.
That is why we are making this first screening a festive evening. In the presence of the new Councillor for Culture, Theo de Groot, we will raise a glass together upon arrival to mark this new phase. After a few brief words, we’ll take the audience to the Kleine Zaal, where the focus will, of course, be on what it’s all about in the end: enjoying a great film together.
A new home, a new partnership, but with the same love of film. We look forward to welcoming our audience back on 18 September.

Synopsis
Young Geneviève helps her mother in an umbrella shop in Cherbourg and is head over heels in love with car mechanic Guy. Their future seems a foregone conclusion, until Guy is called up for military service in Algeria. During his absence, circumstances force Geneviève to make a life-changing decision. When Guy returns, it becomes clear that time has irrevocably taken its toll.
With *The Umbrellas of Cherbourg*, Jacques Demy made film history. Every line of dialogue is sung to the music of Michel Legrand, creating a fully composed musical that remains both a moving and realistic love story. Catherine Deneuve made her international breakthrough with her leading role, and the film won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1964. This was followed by five Oscar nominations, including for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Original Score. The stunning 4K restoration allows Demy’s explosion of colour and music to shine in all its glory once again.
