Synopsis
Young Geneviève helps her mother in an umbrella shop in Cherbourg and is madly in love with car mechanic Guy. Their future seems certain, until Guy is called up for military service in Algeria. During his absence, circumstances force Geneviève to make a drastic choice. When Guy returns, it becomes clear that time has irrevocably taken its toll.
With *Les parapluies de Cherbourg*, Jacques Demy made cinema history. Every line of dialogue is sung to the music of Michel Legrand, creating a fully scored musical that remains, at the same time, a moving and realistic love drama. Catherine Deneuve made her international breakthrough with her leading role, and the film won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1964. This was followed by five Oscar nominations, including for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Original Score. The stunning 4K restoration allows Demy’s explosion of colour and music to shine through once again.
