Synopsis

Young Pierre arrives on the Belgian front as a new recruit, determined to prove himself. Amidst the muddy trenches and the relentless violence of war, he tries to find his place. Behind the lines, he meets Francis, who, together with a group of unfit soldiers, puts on improvised theatre performances to keep the troops’ morale high.

In Francis’s world, Pierre discovers an unexpected space for imagination and tenderness. As the war rages on relentlessly, the two men grow ever closer, and a love blossoms that clashes with the harsh reality around them.

Following *Girl* and *Close*, director Lukas Dhont returns with a drama about masculinity, vulnerability and the power of art. Lead actors Emmanuel Macchia and Valentin Campagne were jointly awarded the Best Actor prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
