Synopsis

Palestine, 1936. As tensions mount under the British Mandate, young Yusuf travels daily between his village and Jerusalem. There, journalists attempt to report on the growing unrest, whilst censorship and repression intensify. His friend Khalid joins the resistance, and Yusuf, too, becomes increasingly drawn into the events.

Against the backdrop of the Arab Revolt and the arrival of Jewish refugees from Europe, the lives of Palestinians, British and newcomers become increasingly intertwined. Clashing interests and ideals ultimately lead to armed conflict.

Director Annemarie Jacir weaves personal stories with historical events. PALESTINE 36 features an international cast including Hiam Abbass, Saleh Bakri, Yasmine Al Massri, Jeremy Irons, Robert Aramayo and Liam Cunningham.
