Naza

Synopsis

On the rooftops of Tel Aviv, Israeli soldiers hold secret conversations at night about their role in the war in Gaza. Their testimonies reveal how targets are selected within the army and the intelligence services, how technology is deployed, and how the expected number of civilian casualties is factored into attacks.

Directors Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, two of the filmmakers behind the Oscar-winning documentary *No Other Land*, explore how violence and dehumanisation can become normalised within a military system. The title refers to Nezek Agavi, the Israeli military term for ‘collateral damage’: the expected number of civilian casualties from an attack.

Filmed at night and from their perspective as Israelis, Abraham and Szor focus the camera not only on the revelations, but also on responsibility, silence and looking away. Naza won the Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival.
