What is schrit_tmacher just dance!
schrit_tmacher just dance is an international contemporary dance festival in the Euregion that links the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium in one cross-border programme. The festival takes place in places including Heerlen, Kerkrade and Sittard-Geleen, Aachen and Eupen.
For about five weeks, the region is dedicated to modern and contemporary dance, with companies and makers from all over the world. schrit_tmacher presents large-scale productions as well as intimate and innovative performances, complemented by films, exhibitions, workshops and youth programmes.
Since its inception in 1993, the festival has grown into a leading international dance event, pioneering dance art to the Euroregion and connecting people across borders.
Retrospective schrit_tmacher Festival 2026, 31st edition
The 31st edition of schrit_tmacher was all about 'embodiment'. For five weeks, Heerlen, Kerkrade, Sittard, Aachen and Eupen together formed the stage for an international programme featuring leading companies, new makers and world premieres. With the central question: how does dance bring strength and connection to a world that sometimes seems divided?
The 31st edition underlined schrit_tmacher's unique position as a connecting dance festival across national borders. The three opening performances in Heerlen, Aachen and Eupen symbolised this cooperation, culminating in the opening at Theater Heerlen: INK, an impressive production by Huang Yi Studio + and Ryoichi Kurokawa.
A festival that gets the region moving
Besides the main programme, 2026 had a special focus on young audiences and talent development. Under the banner YOUNG and new banner TALENT, dance talent from the region and beyond was extra celebrated.
What made this edition extra special was the way dance crossed the boundaries of theatre. With workshops, talks and public dance classes in unexpected places in the city, the festival became an invitation to meet, move and exchange throughout the region.
